THE ONLY ONE LEFT BY RILEY SAGER

,

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Let’s start this review off by saying, I’m a Riley Sager mega fan.
Now, let’s talk book. If I had to describe this book in one word the answer would be ‘messy’.

The overall plot… messy. The ‘setups’ to try to confuse the reader were … silly, coincidental and unbelievable. There were so many holes in the plot. So many situations that didn’t make sense and the main reason for the confusion was the MC was such an idiot. For example, did Mary leave, suicide or murder? I mean, it’s our only options and reading the way the MC worked through all the possibilities was nauseating. I could list a few more situations, but I’d rather not create a spoiler, so I’ll leave my whining to that.

The book was super repetitive. Which I found myself thinking ‘blah blah blah’ as I read multiple times (which is never a good thing) because I already knew what I was reading.
The twists were plentiful and twisty. A little too twisty. A little too much. A little unnecessary. And the ending will leave you feeling like you just got off a rollercoaster and not quite sure why you put yourself through that.
I don’t have many nice things to say about this book. It is probably the worst of the RS books I’ve read. YET! … (yes, there is a ‘yet’) …. I was obsessed. I’m not sure if it was because I waited for this to come out, waited to find a copy,  waited for it to be delivered….. but I could not put this book down. It was a ‘bigger-than-most’ book and even though fairly repetitive, it felt fast paced. I obsessively ‘had’ to read, had to know what was going to happen and hopped RS wouldn’t let me down (he kinda did, but I’m okay). The last book wasn’t my favorite either, yet I still became obsessed.
So whatever magic RS has, he puts it in his writing and it works. So plot of the book 2 stars, organization 2 stars, writing 5 stars.
